Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Speciality Clinic

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based treatment that builds skills to manage intense emotions, navigate relationships, cope effectively with stress, and create lives that feel more meaningful and manageable. DBT combines acceptance with practical strategies for making meaningful changes and is especially helpful for individuals who experience significant emotional distress, difficulty regulating emotions, impulsive or self-destructive behaviors, interpersonal challenges, or difficulty coping with stressful situations (including suicidality and self-harm).

At Spalding University’s Center for Behavioral Health, the DBT Clinic provides comprehensive DBT services for adolescents and adults.

Our DBT services include:

  • Individual DBT Therapy: dedicated weekly space to work toward treatment goals, apply DBT skills to everyday challenges, and address behaviors that interfere with building a life worth living.
  • Individual Parenting Support: Parents of teen clients can receive bi-weekly individualized DBT-informed support to strengthen parenting skills, improve communication, respond effectively to challenging behaviors, and better manage their own emotional responses.
  • DBT Skills Groups: We offer weekly skills groups tailored to teens, adults, and parents. Groups skills modules include mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. The length of completion for a full round of group is six months.
  • Phone Coaching: Individual therapy clients receive phone coaching to help them use DBT skills in the moment when they are experiencing a difficult situation. Coaching focuses on helping clients apply skills independently in real-life situations between sessions.
  • DBT Consultation Team: Our clinicians participate in a DBT consultation team, a core component of comprehensive DBT. The consultation team supports therapists in providing effective, adherent DBT while helping clinicians maintain a collaborative, compassionate, and skills-focused approach.
